Dental Implants
restore your smile
Overview
Dental implants are small, threaded posts that surgically replace missing teeth. In addition to filling in gaps in your smile, dental implants improve chewing function and overall oral health. Once healed, implants work much like natural teeth.
Dental Implant Surgery Overview
Dental implant surgery is a highly personalized procedure tailored to meet each patient’s unique needs. While the specifics may vary, the general process includes the following steps:
Surgical placement of the implant
Healing period
Attachment of the post and final restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture
During the procedure, your dentist will:
Administer anesthesia: Anaesthetic medication will be used to numb the treatment area. If sedation is chosen, additional medications will be provided to help you relax.
Make an incision: An incision will be made in your gums to expose the underlying bone.
Prepare the jawbone: Specialized instruments will be used to create a small opening in the jawbone. The opening will be widened gradually to fit the dental implant.
Place the implant: The dental implant will be carefully inserted into the prepared site in your jawbone.
Close the incision: Your gums will be re-positioned, and the incision will be closed with stitches.
If the implant is near the front of your mouth, your dentist may provide a temporary tooth to wear during the healing period, ensuring your smile remains intact. For implants placed at the back of the mouth, a temporary tooth is often unnecessary. Your dentist will discuss with you in detail what to expect based on your specific case.
Healing phase
During the healing phase, your jawbone will gradually fuse with the dental implant in a process known as osseointegration and can take anywhere between three to nine months. This is essential for ensuring the stability and long-term success of the implant.
