Dental Crowns

restore your smile

Overview

A dental crown is a custom-made prosthetic that fully encases a single tooth with a durable material such as porcelain. Crowns are used to strengthen weakened teeth, restore broken or damaged teeth, conceal misshapen or discolored teeth, and make various cosmetic and restorative improvements to your smile and bite.

At York Smile Dental Center, our partner labs provide high-quality dental crowns crafted from advanced, natural-colored porcelain. Designed to look and function like natural teeth, your crown will seamlessly blend with your smile while providing long-lasting durability.

Benefits of a Dental Crown

  • Protect and support a cracked tooth

  • Restore a worn-down or broken tooth

  • Hold a dental bridge in place

  • Cover a severely stained/discolored tooth

  • Cover a root canal treated tooh

  • Cover a dental implant

Procedure Details

A typical dental crown procedure typically requires two visits

First Visit:

  1. Preparing your tooth. To prepare your tooth for a crown, your dentist will carefully remove a portion of the natural enamel. This creates the necessary space for the crown and ensures a secure fit once it is bonded in place. In some cases, your dentist may use filling material to rebuild specific areas of the tooth, providing a strong and stable foundation for the new crown.

  2. Dental impressions. The next step involves taking impressions of your teeth, which can be done using either a putty-like material for physical impressions or a handheld scanner for digital impressions. These detailed impressions are then sent to our partner laboratories where skilled technicians will use them to craft your custom dental crown.

  3. Temporary crown placement. It can take up to 3 weeks for your custom dental crown to arrive. While you wait on your final crown, your dentist will place a temporary one. Temporary crowns are usually made of resin or acrylic.

Second Visit

  1. After we receive your final crown, our dentist will check the shape, color and fit of your new crown.

  2. The final step is to bond your new crown to your tooth using a strong dental cement. If well taken care of, the new crown can last up to 15 years.

Recovery

Most individuals can return to work, school, and other daily activities immediately after having a crown placed. However, it is common to experience some sensitivity to temperature, particularly hot and cold, for a week or two.

Additionally, you may notice minor soreness or tenderness in the gums surrounding the treated tooth. These effects are normal and typically subside within a few days.
