Oral Appliance for Sleep Apea

Overview

Oral appliances for sleep apnea are dental devices, or mouthpieces, designed to keep your airway open while you sleep. Healthcare providers commonly use them to manage obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

OSA occurs when your upper airway becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep, reducing airflow. This prompts your brain to wake you up briefly to restore breathing. The cycle of restricted airflow, waking, and falling back asleep can repeat throughout the night, disrupting restful sleep and limiting oxygen delivery to vital organs. If left untreated, OSA can lead to serious health issues and even be life-threatening.

Oral appliances, also known as oral appliance therapy, help treat OSA by positioning your mouth to ensure adequate airflow. They improve breathing and reduce the frequency of sleep disruptions caused by OSA.

Benefits of Oral Appliance Therapy

  • Improve symptoms of OSA, including daytime sleepiness and concentration issues

  • Most patients experience deeper sleep with fewer disruptions

  • Reduce/eliminate snoring

  • Easy to take along while traveling
